POZZOLANA CEMENT PLANT

The problem of inadequate housing in developing countries, including Ghana, has become a very critical one, particularly due to the increasing population, deterioration of old swish and mud houses, and high cost of building materials, especially cement. In Ghana, ordinary Portland cement, produced from imported clinker and gypsum, is the main binding material for housing construction. Cement consumption has been increasing steadily in the past decade from about 1.02 million tonnes in 1992 to 2.5 million tonnes in 2005. The country spends more than $120 million annually to import the raw materials for cement production. Consumption of cement will continue to increase because of increased activities in the construction industry.

However, the price of cement is very high, ranging between $6.5 and $8.00 per bag of 50kg. This and other factors have resulted in high cost of housing construction in Ghana. This has created a worsening housing situation in the country. The housing deficit as at 2005 is estimated at 500,000.

The need to reduce the excessive dependence on imported materials and rather concentrate on the production and use of durable local cementitious materials for housing delivery is therefore essential. This would greatly reduce the cost of the key building material and thereby making houses affordable to majority of Ghanaians. One of such local materials is Pozzolana cement.

In Ghana, the Building and Road Research Institute (BRRI), which has conducted extensive research and development activities on the production of Pozzolana from clay, has established a plant for Pozzolana production. The Pozzolana is then blended with Portland cement to produce Pozzolana cement on site.

Project Objectives

The main objective of the project is to produce Pozzolana from clay for housing construction. In addition, the project is aimed at producing affordable but durable cement, which will reduce the cost of housing in Ghana.

Facilities
The facilities/equipment available for Pozzolana production are:

  • High speed Hammer mills;
  • Heavy duty Hammer mill;
  • Noduliser;
  • 5 tonne capacity ball mill;
  • Laboratory scale ball mill; and
  • Shaft kiln with motorised extractor and blowers

In addition, the Institute has:

  • A chemistry laboratory; and
  • building materials development laboratory

Products

The plant produces only Pozzolana from clay and sold to the public.
