Abstract
Accommodation has been one of the major problems students face on Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus. Continuing students are not accommodated in the halls of residence and are therefore forced to stay in hostels in and around KNUST campus. The paper recognises the problem faced by students, university authorities and parents, and attempts to provide an accommodation information system for hostels in and around KNUST campus. The paper focuses on the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide an efficient and integrated spatial database - spatial (locations) and non-spatial (descriptive information and the pictorial aspects) information of available hostels on maps. Global Positioning System (GPS) was used to collect the spatial locations of the hostel . Questionnaires were administered to collect the non-spatial data and a digital camera was used to capture pictorial aspects of the hostels. The paper further discusses the classification and the maintenance of hostels. Macromedia Dreamweaver MX software was used to design user-friendly webpages to facilitate the accessibility of both spatial and non-spatial information about the hostel on the World Wide Web (WWW).
