Abstract The Housing and Road sectors of a country are benchmarks of measures of economic growth, and approximately $1.0 billion is spent annually on infrastructure works in Ghana. Over the last five years, the bulk of the said amount in the road and housing sectors has been limited to the hardware component with little attention placed on the training of local contractors. Moreover, the responsibility of local contractor training and capacity building has still not been defined. This paper highlights the procedures, objectives, benefits, methodologies and programme design for training Building Contractors, organized by the Building and Road Research Institute (BRRI) with the support of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing from 1988 to 1998. It is the hope of the authors that the procedures and methods recommended will be adopted as a guide for future training in the road and shelter sectors.
